Declaration by High Representative Catherine Ashton on behalf of the European Union on Syria Human rights cases

Brussels, 26 July 2010, 12617/10, PRESSE 221 – The EU strongly condemns the sentencing of Mr. Haitham Al Maleh and Mr. Muhannad Al Hassani, two Syrian lawyers, to three years in prison respectively, on charges that appear to be in breach of their fundamental rights and freedoms.

The EU also deeply deplores the renewed arrest on 17 June of Mr. Ali Al-Abdullah, a Syrian writer, a day after his release from prison having completed his previous sentence.

The EU is in particular gravely concerned by the situation of Mr. Al Maleh, due to his fragile health and advanced age.

The EU calls for the immediate release of MM. Al Maleh, Al Hassani and Al-Abudullah.

The EU calls on the Syrian Government to reconsider all cases of prisoners of conscience in accordance with its national Constitution and its international commitments and to immediately release all such prisoners. (more…)

Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on the situation of Human Rights Defenders in the North Caucasus

Brussels, 16 July 2010 – The European Union expresses its preoccupation at the continuing human rights violations in the North Caucasus and the worsening of the situation of human rights defenders in the region, as also noted in Dick Marty´s (Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) report on the human rights violations in the North Caucasus, one year after the assassination of Mrs Natalia Estemirova of the Non-Governmental Organisation Memorial.

The European Union is concerned at the recent threats received by the NGO Memorial and the charges brought forward against its Director, Mr Oleg Orlov.

The European Union recalls the importance of protecting human rights defenders in Russia and worldwide, and allowing them to freely exercise their activities in accordance with the Declaration of the United Nations General Assembly on Human Rights Defenders, adopted in 1998. (more…)

Those responsible for the death of Natalia Estemirova must be brought to justice

Posted on 2010-07-13 – One year has passed since human rights defender Natalia Estemirova was brutally murdered. On 15 July 2009 she was abducted near her house in Grozny, Chechnya. She was pushed into a car by several assailants and some hours later her body was found in a forest in Ingushetia. She had been shot in the head and chest. (all press releases) | (more…)

EP resolution on Zimbabwe, notably the case of Farai Maguwu

The European Parliament ,

–   having regard to its numerous previous resolutions on Zimbabwe, most recently that of 17 December 2008(1) ,

–   having regard to Council Common Position 2010/92/CFSP of 15 February 2010(2) renewing until 20 February 2011 the restrictive measures against Zimbabwe imposed under Common Position 2004/161/CFSP(3) , and to Commission Regulation 1226/2008 of 8 December 2008(4) , amending the Common Position,

–   having regard to the Foreign Affairs Council conclusions of 22 February 2010 on Zimbabwe, and to the conclusions of the 10th EU-South Africa Ministerial Political Dialogue of 11 May 2010 on Zimbabwe,

–   having regard to previous UN resolutions on blood diamonds, and in particular to UN Security Council resolution 1459 (2003) on the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme,

–   having regard to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), which requires its members to certify that rough diamonds are not used to finance armed conflicts,
